BUDDHA VS. THE SCRIPTURES: WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW

The Buddha Taught Dhamma — Not Doctrine
The historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was radically simple, experiential, and anti-authoritarian.
He emphasized direct perception, self-inquiry, and liberation from all forms of attachment — including to his own teachings.
He clearly warned:
“Do not accept anything simply because it is said by me… test it for yourself.”
But here’s what most people overlook:
The Buddha wasn’t building an institution — he was dismantling illusion.
⸻
The Scriptures Were Written Centuries Later
Buddha himself never wrote a word.
His teachings were passed down orally for nearly 400 years before anything was documented.
And when it was finally written?
It wasn’t by mystics or spiritual revolutionaries.
It was by state-sponsored monks under the rule of kings.
This is the twist most never see coming.
⸻
Who Really Wrote the Canon?
Let’s cut through the mythology
The Pāli Canon — the core of Theravāda Buddhism — was compiled under the watchful eye of monarchy.
Particularly:
• King Vattagamani (1st Century BCE), who commissioned the transcription of the teachings in Sri Lanka
• Powerful Buddhist Councils, who defined “orthodoxy” and eliminated deviations
This wasn’t a spiritual effort.
It was a political one.
What emerged wasn’t raw Dhamma.
It was doctrine — edited, approved, and locked down to serve the kingdom.
And this is the true aha moment:
The teachings most Buddhists follow today were not authored by the Buddha,
but by councils of monks and kings who filtered and redefined his words to maintain social control.
⸻
This Is Bigger Than Buddhism
This pattern didn’t start in Sri Lanka.
It’s been replayed throughout history.
• King James rewrote the Bible — then kicked off one of Europe’s most violent witch hunts
• The Church of England was created so a king could remarry — then used to jail dissenters
• Crusades, colonialism, and conquest were all justified through “divine” scripts ghostwritten by power-hungry councils
Same blueprint, every time:
→ Take a raw spiritual truth
→ Rewrite it through kings’ councils
→ Call it “holy”
→ Use it to control the population
⸻
No King’s Council Ever Wanted to Free Its Peasants
And they still don’t.
Most peasants didn’t even know their king
But they did know his doctrines — because those were the tools of control.
Passed down. Memorized. Enforced.
They weren’t written to awaken minds.
They were written to domesticate them.
⸻
The Robes of Obedience
So when you find yourself on a meditation cushion, trying to “detach” or “watch your breath”…
Pause.
Ask yourself:
Are you actually awakening?
Or are you following a state-issued behavior manual disguised as spiritual truth?
Because what Buddha taught was revolution.
What survived the kings’ edits was compliance.
And unless you trace the origin of your beliefs —
Unless you ask who translated, and why —
You might still be inside the palace walls… without even knowing it.
